Abandoned Long IslandWhat's so interesting about an abandoned building anyway? You would be surprised. Old abandoned buildings can be a time machine to a long forgotten era.
Long Island has played a vital part in US and world history. We built the craft that put a man on the moon, built the airplanes that assisted in winning WWII, housed a good share of the baby boomers & gold coast millionaires, and supported many varied industries. Every major era of history leaves something behind that tells a tale to the next generations. Abandonments are our window into these great eras, allowing us to learn about our remarkable history.
Some of the items on this list are no longer in existence, falling victim to a bull dozer and "progress." While nobody can ever predict how long an abandonment will last, they are temporary portals to the past. Museums that fade if you will.
That being said I invite you to take a look at some of these wonders that I have had the opportunity to peer into. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

AsylumsFor many years Suffolk County had four large state hospitals practically right next to each other. They were the Kings Park State Hospital, Central Islip State Hospital, Pilgrim State Hospital and Edgewood State Hospital. Each had its own infrastructure which included fire and police stations, employee housing, warehouses, train stations, power plants, and farms. They were almost completely self sufficient. Here you will see the abandoned ruins left from this era.
