Those who know the look of asylums and sanitariums
will find the copper use familiar. This is one of the administration
buildings on the campus.
The grounds of the Suffolk
Community College Selden campus used to have an entirely different
use. Back before the campus opened for business there it was a hospital
for those with tuberculoses. The campus took over in 1962 and used
the same buildings as the TB center. To this day a few of the campus
buildings are still there and being utilized.
This house I believe was used
by the director of the sanitarium and was definitely the one time
house for the College's president. Now it used by the Alumni Association.
Listed as #8 on campus map below.
The shaded area on this old Hagstrom from
the 50s shows a shaded area labeled"Suffolk County Sanitorium"
Right: A 1956 map shows the sanitorium
and its buildings.
This more recent USGS topological map shows
the same area listed as Suffolk Community College.
This is from a 1962 brochure The campus was brand new at this point,
so all the buildings shown were part of the sanitarium. This is
consistent with the above topo map. It is amazing how they used
to recycle old buildings. I sure wish they would do that with places
like Kings Park. Bellow is a look at how the campus looks today.
You will see that to this day a few of the buildings are still there
and in use. The only buildings that are missing appears to be 4,5
& 6 which is now one large building, the Southampton building.
Left: 2004 campus map. The
red ones are the old sanitarium building.
Listed as 7 on the 1962 campus map. Now
used for central administration.
At the time a popular cure
for TB was thought to be fresh air. So many tubercular centers would
sport airy porches where patients would spent most of their final
days. The buildings at this campus have such porches as well here
are two seen from building 2 & 3 on the 1962 map above.
If you attend class there or
work there and notice any remnant from the Sanitorium days please
