The grounds and buildings of the Suffolk
Comunity College Brentwood campus werent always used for higher education.
Pilgrim, like Central Islip Psych and Kings Park Psych was also a
farm colony. There are many remnants of Pilgrims farm colony left
today because of Suffolk Community College taking over the property
and reusing the buildings. Many of the buildings still show signs
of there former use.
This is a doorway to a campus
building at SCC's Brentwood campus. It wasn't always though. It used
to be a building for the Pilgrim farm colony, where patients would
grow food for the psychiatric center. Notice that the stone work reveals
cattle. This is no doubt a leftover from the farm colony
The campus is also reusing the farm groups staff
cottages.
The sewer caps still say PSH on them which
stands for Pilgrim State Hospital.
The college is even using the old steam
tunnels for heating and network cables. Interestingly enough, when
this was Pilgrim these tunnels never connected to the ones on the
main part of pilgrim. They instead had there own boiler for heat destrobution.
To the left we see a bricked up entrance to one of the small cottages.
