On one fateful day in January 1997, James Halverson, an off duty firefighter was shot while running on this track. The athletic track used by Centereach High School has ever since been rumored to be haunted.

Local legend states that the fireman was shot by a youth or youths who had come to the track bored with nothing else to do. According to a Yahoo New York News story located here, a William Sodders was accused of the crime.

According to local legends, many students and visitors feel a strong reluctance to sit on the visitor's bleachers in the northeast corner. Some say they have seen the firefighter's ghost in lane 5 of the track.

Investigations of this site have so far not led to much evidence of paranormal activity. As you see in the photos to the right we did get some orbs when taking flash photographs but we are almost certain it was either dust on the lens or dust / moisture in the air.
