Having the right equipment is one of the most important factors in doing a good, evidence backed, investigation. There are many theories concerning the supernatural and electromagnetic disturbances as well as rapid temperature changes and other measurable effects. Solid proof of the paranormal can only be achieved with scientific precision and detailed measurements to compare and contrast with normal readings. There are many theories as to the interaction of spirits with various pieces of equipment and for the most part they are still just theories. New technology is always being tested and hopefully someday we will find a reasonably sure fire way to detect the paranormal.
A tape recorder is used to record noises, voices, and any other sounds it could pick up. Make sure there is a blank tape in the recorder and set the speed you will be recording at. We feel that it is best to record at fast speed because you can pick up more sounds. Some of the things you want to do when you use a tape recorder is document what time it is and where you are. You should also ask questions in the supposed haunted area. After you're finished using the recorder you need to analyze the tape for EVPs (electronic voice phenomenon). Using similar techniques as a normal audio recorder, the digital recorder provides more clarity. It is also easier to import to a computer.
Temperature devises are used in measuring hot and cold. We use temperature gauges to look for "cold spots". "When a ghost tries to materialize, it draws from the environment, heat as a form of energy". Cold spots may be caused by spirits who take in the heat energy around that area. The first thing you want to do is to take a temperature reading at your home base to get a reading that is normal. When your out in the field you want to have everyone around you hold there position and take readings of the supposed haunted area. With a digital thermometer the probe's range is 3 feet. When you are out in the field you want to unravel the probe and let the wire go and drag it around. In terms of the infrared thermometer, the range in feet of the CEM thermometer is 1 foot to 1 mile, and the radioshack thermometer ranges from 1 to 3 feet.
Thermo imaging provides the viewer with vision through objects. The thermo imaging will pick up any heat within the field of vision. This proves very useful for expeditions into haunted or supposed haunted sites. Any living object, in our case humans and animals, will give off some form of heat source. If a human or animal is seen but shows no heat source, it can be assumed that it is an apparition. If you see a ghost or apparition through thermo imaging you will see colder colors like blues and greens, because ghosts and apparitions are considered to be cold objects.
